A New Governor, A New Legislature

Statement of Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano and Council 15 (Connecticut Council of Police) Executive Director Jeffrey Matchett on Governor Malloy's State of the State speech delivered Jan. 5 in Hartford:

“We appreciate Governor Malloy for his comments earlier today. His commitment to the families of Connecticut is clear, and we look forward to working with him on the issues our state faces as we begin 2011.

“Governor Malloy knows that the key to putting people back to work and growing the middle class is protecting the jobs that people have. He understands that keeping police officers on the street and teachers in the classroom means a stronger economy, and that starving the public services Connecticut residents need most is not the way out of crisis.

“As the new year begins, Americans continue to face a time of epic unemployment and financial-insecurity.

“Some politicians have recently taken to blaming public employees for our depressed economy. This misinformation is a smear tactic at its best.  It is imperative that we have a leader with the sense and skills to attack the real problems facing our state, not the imagined ones. We think Governor Malloy will be that kind of leader, someone committed to creating good-paying, family-supporting jobs.

“While the Governor will have difficult decisions to make in the first few weeks of his Administration, we look forward to partnering with his administrationto better the lives of Connecticut families.”

Dannel Malloy expressed his support for AFSCME Local 3145 members during their strike against the Red Cross last June.
