Kelly Martinez: Riding for a Cause

Ten years ago, Council 4 Staff Representative Kelly Martinez conquererd leukemia, with a huge assist from her brother Kenny, who turned out to be the perfect match for a bone marrow/stem cell transplant.

On Aug. 1-2, Martinez will celtebrate her milestone by riding 163 miles, from Wellesley, MA to Provincetown, as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge.

Nearly 6,000 cyclists will participate in the annual bike-a-thon, which raises funds for cancer research at Boston's Dana-Farber Institute, where Martinez was treated by Dr. Corey Cutler in 2005.

"I am part of a dynamic team called The Stem Cell Cyclists. All the money we raise will go to fund Dr. Cutler's stem cell research. If it wasn't for trials and research my recovery might not have been as successful as it was," Martinez says.

The Council 4 family has stepped up to support Kelly's participation in the Pan-Mass Challenge. Local 749, representing state judicial and criminal justice employees, contributed $749. Council 4 and the Association of Council 4 Employees bargaining unit each contributed $500.
